Tehri Dam construction detail

Tehri Dam is a type of embankment dam. Embankment dam is a dam, which is made from natural material such as soil and stone etc. The concrete material is mainly used in the core of this type of dam and the sides and the upper surface are made up of clay, soil, and stone. Layers of this type of dam are very dense so that the water can not go in. Overall, the embankment dam is like an artificial mountain, whose core is solid and due to high denseness, it remains highly stable so that it also absorbs the earthquake shocks.

The Tehri hydro project is divided into two phases-

Phase 1: Tehri Dam and Hydropower Plant come in the first phase. The Power Plant that was made under it became ready in July 2006 with the Tehri hydro project and this plant is producing 1000 MW of power.

The second phase has 2 projects – Tehri Pumped Storage Plant. This project is not ready yet. The second project is Koteshwar Dam which is 22 km away from this place.

History of Tehri Dam Project

In the year 1949, the Uttar Pradesh Government first planned to build a dam at this place. This place was examined under the project till 1961. The design of Tehri hydro project was also prepared by Professor James Brun around 1970. In 1972, the Central Planning Commission gave a green signal to Tehri hydro project, under which 75% of funding in this project would be funded by the central government and 25% by Uttarakhand government.

Because millions of people were affected by this Tehri Dam project, then many people and many environmental protectors started opposing the construction of Tehri Bandh. Firstly, Rajmata Kamalendumati Shah of Tehri principality raised the voice against the project. The work of Tehri Dam project started in 1978. In the same year, the anti-dam committee (Bandh Virodhi Pariyojna) was constituted under the chairmanship of Vidya Sagar Nautiyal in Tehri. Sunder Lal Bahuguna and advocate Virendra Saklani were also present in this committee.

Virendra Saklani filed a petition in the Supreme Court against this project. Sunder Lal Bahuguna was also opposed to Tehri Dam project several times, including 74 days of hunger strike on Raj Ghat. In 1986, President of Russia Mikhail Gorbachev came to India and agreed to help India with the Tehri Dam Project. After which the total production of this project was increased from 600 megawatts to 2400 megawatt.

Due to the slow pace of work in 1988, the Central Government and Uttarakhand state government together formed the THDC (Tehri Hydropower Development Corporation Limited). And in 1989, they handed over the complete Tehri Dam project to THDC. Earlier this project was being constructed by the Irrigation Department.
