About Dunagiri Mandir

Dunagiri Mandir is situated at a distance of 14 km from Dwarahat of Almora district and 48 km from Ranikhet of Uttarakhand. To get the darshan of this temple, devotees come from far away. This temple is considered to be the ancient and famous temple of Almora where Devi is worshiped in her Vaishnavi avatar. The temple is situated in a dense forest and is the biggest center of faith.

As there are 3 Pindi of Vaishno Mata in Jammu, there are 2 Pindi of Vaishno Mata in the Dunagiri temple. The coconut offered at the Dunagiri temple is never seethed. In this mountain of Dundagiri, such herbicides are found, which also glows at night. Bhandara is organized from the money donated by the devotees daily in the temple premises.

Dunagiri Mandir Travel information

The path of the Dunagiri temple starts from Manglikhan. There is a temple of Hanuman Ji before the stairs. In order to visit the goddess, devotees first have to climb up to 500 stairs. As the traveler move forward in the stairs, the names appear on the wall. These are the names that donated money to the temple committee in the construction of the temple stairs. A little below the temple there is a fountain which is surrounded by oak trees. There is also an Ashram located below the temple premises.

History of Dunagiri Mnadir

This place is mentioned in the Manashankh of Skanda Purana. This mountain has been addressed as Barham Parvat. And Doonagiri Mata has been mentioned in the Skanda Purana by the name Haripriya.

The story behind Dunagiri Mandir

First Story

According to a legend, in Tretayuga when Lakshman Ji was wounded during the war in Lanka. Then a Vaidh named Sushain told Hanumanji to go to Dronanchal Mountain and bring Sanjivani Buti. Then Hanuman Ji reached Dronachal Mountain to take Sanjivani Buti but they did not understand which of them is Sanjivani Buti. So he decided that he would take the entire mountain. When they were carrying up the mountain then some part of that mountain fell on this place. Hence this place was named Dronagiri, which later became known as Dunagiri.

Second Story

During the Mahabharata period, Pandavas Guru, Guru Dronacharya came to this place and did penance. That’s why this mountain was named Dronagiri.At a distance of a few kilometers from this temple, there is a place called Pandavkholi Where the Pandavas stayed during their Vanvas.

Dunagiri Mandir Timing

Winters: From November to February gate opening and closing time is 5:00 Am to 5:00 Pm.

Summer: From March to October gate opening and closing time is 4:00 Am to 7:00 Pm.

The travelers can reach Dunagiri Mandir only by road. Doonagiri is 395 Km away from New Delhi and 316 Km away from Dehradun. The nearest railway station form Doonagiri Mandir is Kathgodam which is 122 km away. The nearest airport from Doonagiri Temple is Pantnagar Airport which is 156 Km away. Doonagiri has located 48 km from Ranikhet. From railway station and airport the traveler can hire a taxi or can travel by public transport.
